Step-by-Step Tying Cuttlefish Fly

Tying this Cuttlefish fly pattern, I was inspired by the Cuttlefish fly pattern tied by Henkie Altima. He tied many nice flies and cool fly patterns.
Cuttlefish is a great food source to many fish species in the sea. This is a good thing. It means that if we tie flies that are alike to the cuttlefish, something will generally want to eat them. And in many ways we already do tie and use patterns that do a reasonable job of imitating them.

Tying Materials
 • Olive Green (60 denier) / Clear Monofil Thread.
• O'Shaughnessy Hook (size #1).
• Slinky Fiber Blend – Olive Green.
• Sili-Legs Speckled – Clear w/Pearl Silver.
• Old School Lure Eyes/ Doll eyes – 4mm.
• Fly Rattles – Micro 3mm.
• Thin White Foam.
• Pearl Mylar Piping (Large).
• Lead Wire (.020 to .025).
• Bug-Bong Multipurpose UV Cure Resin – Original.
• Color Marker – Olive Green & Dark Green/ Black

Tying Steps
Step 1
•  Insert and secure the hook into the vise.

Step 2
•  Wrapped the thread onto the hook.
•  Wrap the thread over the hook shank.

Step 3
•  Turn the vise to turn the hook face up.

Step 4
•  Cut a lead wire (.025) for about 3cm length. Then fold the lead wire into half.

Step 5
•  Tie the lead wire onto the hook shank. Leave a little space from the hook eye.
•  Tying the lead wire onto the hook is to make the fly sink fast in the water.

Step 6
•  Then, tie the fly Rattler on the lead wire. After tying, turn the hook to its right position.

Step 7
•  Wrap the thread towards the hook bend.

Step 8
•  Cut a short small pinch of Slinky Fiber Blend, and tie it onto the hook bend.

Step 9
•  Cut 4 strands of the Sili-Legs. Then cut them into half. Total you should have 8 strands of Sili-Legs.

Step 10
•  Tie the Sili-Legs onto the Slinky Fiber Blend. The Sili-Legs are the Cuttlefish tentacles.

Step 11
•  Tie the Lure eyes onto both side of the hook shank, near the hook bend.

Step 12
•  Cut a few pinch of the Slinky Fiber Blend and tie them between the Lure eyes (to create the Cuttlefish head).

Step 13
•  Cut a small portion of foam and measure the hook length (L: 2 cm & W: 1.5 cm). Draw out the shell (in a heart shape). Then cut the shape out.

Step 14
•  Tie the bottom of the foam onto the hook shank, right on top of the Slinky fiber.

Step 15
•  Take the Olive Green marker. Paint the entire foam, the head of the Cuttlefish fly and also the sili-legs.
•  After painting the sili-legs, trim the sili-legs to about 2.5 to 3 cm long.

Step 16
•  Take a Pearl Mylar Piping and cut it within the hook length (about 2 cm).

•  Push the Mylar piping through the hook shank and tie it behind the foam. Then whip finish and knot the thread.

Step 17
•  Wrapped the thread behind the hook eye.

•  Tie the other end of the Mylar piping behind the hook eye.

Step 18
•  Pull the foam down and tie the sharp end of the foam behind the hook eye.

•  Whip finish and knot the thread.

Step 19
•  Use a Dark Green/ Black marker to draw the stripes on the body of the Cuttlefish fly.

Step 20
•  Use the Bug-Bond UV Cure Resin to coat over the Cuttlefish fly top and under body.
•  Do it slowly and part-by-part.

Step 21
•  After coating, use the UV torchlight to dry the UV Cure Resin.

Once the Cuttlefish fly is dry, it is ready to be taken out to catch some fish!
